Why did you choose Oregon Tech Online?
After researching several degree completion programs, Oregon Tech’s profile fit what I was looking for. The cost was affordable and the flexibility of the online coursework allowed me to work and go to school at the same time. I was also able to take a semester off when I was preparing for my daughter’s wedding.
What do you like best about your major?
I love dental hygiene and have been a practicing hygienist for 24 years before entering the degree completion program at Oregon Tech. Dental Hygiene is a great career for anyone wanting to be in a healthcare profession. Hygienist’s don’t have to work full-time to make a decent living, so this is what attracted me to the profession because I wanted to be a homemaker and mother when I began my career. Furthering my education will allow me to look for other employment opportunities outside of clinical dental hygiene, like teaching, research, or public health.
What has been the greatest aspect of completing your degree online?
The greatest aspect of online classrooms is the flexibility of hours. The student gets to choose when they go to school. I most often did my coursework on my days off or on weekends. Occasionally, I would log on in the evenings after work, but it was nice knowing I didn't have to if I had other obligations.
What career do you hope to have after you graduate from Oregon Tech?
Now that I have my Bachelor’s degree I would like to enter a Master’s program so that I can become a dental hygiene professor. My professors at Oregon Tech were fantastic mentors and good examples of what college professors should be.
Do you have any advice for incoming students?
My advice for incoming students would be to plan on spending anywhere from 6-10 hours per week for coursework, and occasionally more if research papers are due. Additionally, talk with your advisor so that you can have a plan on how to approach your schedule. Have fun and enjoy learning in this wonderful format!
