OIT is often in the news for awards, new programs, and events.  Recently, Oregon Tech won an Innovation in Engagement Award from Oregon Campus Compact for the development of campus tours highlighting sustainable building and geothermal features.  In 2007, Oregon Tech won the National Wildlife Federation's Chill Out Award for its development of geothermal resources for heating campus buildings.

In 2009, Oregon Tech began offering a Sustainable Technology Emphasis area in the Environmental Sciences program.  Students taking this emphasis area will be able to take courses on sustainable technologies from several engineering and business departments, depending on the student interests.
