Shellie Johnson

Student, Class of 2017
Major(s): Geomatics
Hometown: Vancouver, Washington

Why did you choose Oregon Tech?

I was thinking about continuing to get my bachelor's degree at Oregon Tech after receiving my associate degree at Clark College, but was not sure as I also was considering getting a job in the industry (then continuing education during that time). I then received a scholarship which sealed the deal and I then enrolled.

What do you like best about your major?

What I like best about my major is that it is always an adventure which includes indoors as well as outdoors. Each job starts as a somewhat clean slate then continues to evolve.

What would be your dream job in your major?

I have experience in management and being a manager for a survey group would be a good fit for me. In this job I would make sure that I got out with my team often to see the projects first hand. This would also allow me to have an open communication with my team as well as a clear understanding of the project.

What's your favorite thing to do off campus?

I enjoy the outdoors as this major choice leads to so it would not be a surprise that I enjoy hiking, kayaking, camping and finding new places to take the RV and jeep.

What's your most memorable moment on campus?

I will have to say that when I first came to this campus I was attempting to stay low. This did not last long. I got a work study job with in the first 3 hours of my interview in the cashier's office. Then I was talking to a fellow student who ended up being part of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and encouraged to join, which I did. We became friends and this led to me being a part of the student government and a part of the NASA sounding rocket project.

Hands-on education for real-world achievement.
