A Guide for Transfer Students

Oregon Institute of Technology-Portland works specifically with transfer student applicants. This guide is designed to help smooth your transition and answer some of the admission questions most often asked by transfer applicants. If you need additional information, please contact one of our local admission representatives.  East Campus 503-725-5930; West Campus 503-725-2125.

WHAT ARE OIT/PORTLAND'S TRANSFER ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS?
Students with a 2.25 grade point average (GPA) in 36 quarter (24 semester) hours of transferable college work are normally eligible for admission to OIT. We highly recommend, however, that you maintain a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA and that the coursework you are transferring includes college-level English composition and algebra.  Be sure to have an official transcript from every college you have attended sent directly to the OIT Metro Center Office. If you graduated from high school in or after 1997, you also must provide copies of your official high-school transcripts for evaluation, unless you have completed two or more terms of college-level coursework in a second language at an accredited institution.

If you have less than 36 quarter hours of transferable college-level credit, you will need to submit an official high-school transcript or GED and test scores (SAT or ACT) for evaluation. You also must meet OIT's requirements for freshman admission and high-school core requirements.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR ADMISSION?
Before you apply to OIT/Portland, we ask that you schedule an advising session with one of our general education advisors and degree program directors.  This meeting will allow you to get more detailed information about OIT Portland, receive an unofficial transfer evaluation, as well as map out the most direct path to reach your educational goals and objectives.

Once you have met with an advisor, you can complete and submit the appropriate application or call OIT Portland to request a printed version. The majority of Portland students use the Dual Admit Application in cooperation with PCC as they will more than likely need to take one or more lower division courses there or at another local Community College.  OIT offers rolling admissions throughout the year, but you should observe our priority deadlines if you plan to apply for financial aid and scholarships (Feb. 1).

Once we have received all of the items on the checklist, the Registrar's office in Klamath Falls will provide you with a Transfer Evaluation Report, which will include the number of transferable college credits, your cumulative GPA in the transferable work, and which general-education requirements you have fulfilled. If the evaluation of your college transcripts shows that you have less than 36 hours of transferable work, you will be asked to send high school transcripts and official SAT or ACT test scores.

DO I NEED TO PROVIDE STANDARDIZED TEST SCORES?
You do not need to submit SAT or ACT scores for transfer admission unless you have completed fewer than 36 hours of transferable college credit and/or graduated from high school after 1997.

WILL ALL MY COLLEGE CREDITS COUNT?
A Transfer Evaluation Report acknowledging the courses accepted by Oregon Institute of Technology will be sent after your admission status has been confirmed. Vocational or technical courses may also be accepted, if your major department determines that they satisfy particular bachelor's degree requirements. In all cases, course and/or department prerequisites will be enforced. As a general rule, only credits from regionally accredited institutions can be accepted.

WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE?
Transfer students with associate's degrees will be granted junior standing for registration purposes, but may still be required to take prerequisites and remedial courses before taking upper-division courses.

IS FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE TO TRANSFER STUDENTS? WHAT ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS?
All students, including transfers, enrolled at least half time (6 units per quarter) are eligible for financial aid. To apply for federal and state aid, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and list OIT's school code (003211). The priority deadline for filing your FAFSA is Feb. 1. Students who file after that date are still eligible for aid, but will find that most of the funds have been expended.  You can complete the FAFSA online or obtain a paper copy from one of OIT's Portland offices. For more information on need-based aid and/or detailed questions about financial aid contact our Financial Aid staff at (541) 885-1280 mailto:dollars@oit.edu  Scholarships are available from various sources both inside and outside OIT.
