Clinical Laboratory Science Curriculum
| The Clinical Laboratory Science Program provides undergraduate college instruction at the senior level. The structured 15-month program, which begins in early September, is busy and intense. The program includes 12 months (4 consecutive terms on the OHSU campus))of technical instruction and practical student laboratory experience, followed by an extended 5th term, which is a 16 week clinical laboratory internship conducted at an accredited clinical laboratory. The didactic curriculum conducted during the 12 month, 4 term year contains the following courses: NOTE: Curriculum course order, content areas, and credit hours are subject to change. | Course Number | Course Description | Credits | | CLS 406 | Biometry | 2 | | CLS 410 | Clinical Microbiology I | 2 | | CLS 420 | Clinical Immunology | 3 | | CLS 441 | Instrumentation | 1 | | CLS 442 | Practicum: Hematology | 6 | | CLS 443 | Practicum: Transfusion Medicine | 4 | | CLS 444 | Practicum: Microbiology | 6 | | CLS 445 | Practicum: Mycology | 2 | | CLS 446 | Practicum: Parasitology | 2 | | CLS410/411 | Clinical Microbiology | 2/2 | | CLS 415/416 | Clinical Chemistry I & II | 6/2 | | CLS 447 | Practicum: Chemistry | 6 | | CLS 448 | Practicum: Immunology/Infectious Serology | 2 | | CLS 449 | Practicum: Urinalysis | 2 | | CLS 412 | Pathophysiology | 2 | | CLS 419 | Immunohematology | 2 | | CLS 461/462 | Clinical Laboratory Mgmt I & II | 2/2 | | CLS 440 | Practicum: Specimen Collection | 1 | | CLS 457 | Practicum: Adv Chemistry/Immunology Techniques | 2 | | CLS 452 | Practicum: Adv Hematology Techniques | 2 | | CLS 454 | Practicum: Adv Microbiology Techniques | 2 | | CLS 453 | Practicum: Adv Transfusion Medicine Techniques | 2 | | CLS 459 | Practicum: Adv Urinalysis Techniques | 1 | | CLS 462 | Clinical Laboratory Management III | 1 |
The final term (5th quarter, 2nd Fall term) utilizes adjunct professional faculty at accredited clinical laboratories. Admission to the 16 credit course, CLS 470 (Clinical Laboratory Internship), requires successful completion of all didactic courses. The internship allows hands-on clinical laboratory experience in the following areas: chemistry, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, transfusion medicine, toxicology, parasitology, serology, urinalysis, phlebotomy, specimen processing, laboratory and hospital information systems, quality assurance/quality control, and management. |
