Advancing Knowledge, Transforming Lives

The Department of Sponsored and Pre-College Programs at Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) offers educational outreach programs to students from elementary school through high school in the spirit of encouraging young people to pursue high educational goals and aspire to a college education.

Programs often target activities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Delivery occurs on the Klamath Falls campus as well as on location in schools throughout the state. The programs introduce participants to role models and mentors and use hands-on activities to build self-confidence, technical skills, and creative problem solving. Collaborative learning promotes teamwork and group communication skills. Students, teachers, and parents experience the relationship between science, engineering, and technology disciplines and their applications to everyday life.

"Whether one goes to college or not has a lasting impact on careers, livelihoods, and lifestyles of individual Americans and of society as a whole. The collective effects of individual decisions influence the health and vitality of the economy and society. Our programs target youth from grades 4-12 and are designed to influence educational aspirations of students by introducing them to campus life and career discovery at an early enough stage so that kids sign up for the right courses and are on the right time schedule to not only qualify for college admission, but to succeed in college as well." -Gayle Yamasaki, Director, Department of Sponsored and Pre-College Programs
