Geomatics students use a digital total station.

Degree Offered: Bachelor of Science in Geomatics

Location: Klamath Falls

About the Program
Do you enjoy applications of math and computers but hate the idea of being chained to a desk? Then consider geomatics, an exciting field that fuses land surveying techniques with computer technology.

Advancements in technology have changed the nature of surveying and cartography. Today, geomatics professionals use an integrated approach to measuring, analyzing and managing spatial data, employing high-tech equipment like Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), digital photogrammetry, digital total stations, satellite and terrestrial remote sensing to create a detailed but understandable picture of the Earths natural and manmade features.

At Oregon Tech, the study of geomatics combines theory, problem-solving and field work in a computer-intensive curriculum that prepares students for employment and licensure as Professional Land Surveyors. A shortage of trained personnel makes the employment forecaset for geomatics graduates exceptional.

OITs geomatics program is accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, Md. 21202-4012.

5-year graduate success rate:
Employed: 95%, Grad school: 2%

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average salary for all geomatics professionals is $62,733 per year. This compares favorably with other engineering professions. For example, the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports that the average salary for all Civil Engineers is $61,256 per year.

  • Recent graduates of OITs geomatics program have started at salaries ranging from $36,000 to $54,000 per year.
  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the architecture and engineering occupations group which includes surveyors, cartographers, photogrammetrists and surveying technicians is one of the top 10 occupational groups projected to have the fastest growth in employment between 2002 and 2012.
  • Salary levels are expected to rise as demand for qualified professionals in these fields grows.
  • Employers who have hired our graduates in recent years include: Adams & Clark, Armstrong Surveying, Bureau of Land Management, Caltrans, Kiewit Pacific, OBEC Consulting, W & H Pacific, Oregon DOT, HLB & Assoc., PAC West Engineering and Treasure Valley Engineers.

Typical Courses
Geomatics majors typically take courses in field surveying, computer programming, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). The program also offers coursework in the more traditional areas of surveying, including boundary law, construction surveying and computer-aided drafting.
