Biology Student Profiles
Joey Meeuwsen
Class of 2014
Major: Biology
Hometown: Forest Grove, OR
Why did you choose Oregon Tech?
Personal professor-student interactions were a huge deciding factor. Also, the Klamath Falls campus’ high desert climate and outdoor-oriented recreation opportunities held a special appeal for me, being a biologist and a fan of the outdoors. The nerd-friendly student body is a great fit for me, too.
What do you like best about your major?
I’ve come to love working with and learning about organisms most of all, but the cellular and chemical aspects of biology are incredibly intriguing as well. The biology professors are a great bunch, and class is always interesting.
What clubs or activities are you involved with?
I’m a KTEC DJ and a musician (drums, guitar), and I’m always looking for other people to share music or jam with. I also enjoy hiking, biking, participating in intramural sports, and taking advantage of whatever else the campus has to offer on a day to day basis.
What career do you hope to have after you graduate from Oregon Tech?
I’ll most likely move on to graduate school to focus on a specific goal when the time comes, but I need more time to pinpoint my purpose. I want to be able to explore the world and help solve problems on a global scale.
Do you have any advice for incoming students?
Try everything, especially things that you’re unfamiliar with. Take advantage of free comedians and bands, and always go to events advertising free food. Talk with people in your classes or in your hall, set up study sessions and organize movie parties. Get to know people and take advantage of everything Oregon Tech has to offer.
