Class of 2013
Major: Renewable Energy Engineering
Hometown: Spring Lake, Michigan
Why did you choose Oregon Tech?
I transferred from PSU to Oregon Tech for the REE program and Klamath Falls for the convenience of a centralized campus in sunny Southern Oregon. Plus, my wife also chose Klamath Falls to complete her rural family medicine residency after graduating from medical school at OHSU.
What do you like best about your major?
Energy is what keeps society moving forward and if generated responsibly then energy also contributes to a higher quality of life for the developed and developing world. Contemporary energy issues ensure that renewable energy is going to be the only solution in a world with increasing pressures placed on continuing business as usual, or dependence of carbon based fuels. Needless to say, jobs are in high demand and short supply in most markets of renewable energy design and implementation that is experiencing rapid growth.
What would be your dream job in your major?
I've recently started my own company developing a new solar technology and my dream job would be for my efforts to turn into a successful business that employees a lot of people and contributes to a healthier, more sustainable planet.
What’s your favorite thing to do off campus?
We live an active life in great outdoors that Southern Oregon has to offer. During the summers I'm usually riding mountain and road bikes throughout the northwest. During the winters we ski and snowshoe with our dogs in the Cascade Mountain range. During summer or spring breaks, when I can afford to take time off, I enjoy international travel.
What’s your most memorable moment on campus?
Being a non-traditional student, I've never lived on campus. But, I would have to say that most of my time on campus during the first two years was spent honing in on my skills and knowledge in the electrical engineering labs or working on homework with the tutors in CFLAT. My senior year has been spent mostly working from my home office or with my senior project team at our shop within Eco Solar's warehouse.
