Student Placement Testing

Every effort will be made to pre-place you in your classes based upon information obtained from your ACT/SAT results, HS/College GPA and successfully completed transfer work.  If there is a course where we cannot determine your skill level with the information that has been submitted, you may be asked to complete a designated placement exam to help us determine your skill level.   Failure to complete and submit all necessary testing will complicate your registration process.

In the event that you are not satisfied with your pre-placement, you are welcome to take the placement test to attempt to test into a higher level course.  Please refer to the information below to determine which placement exam(s) you might be required to take.

For additional questions regarding placement exams or to schedule an on or off campus placement exam, please contact grace.rusth@oit.edu.

MATH Placement Requirements:

1. Student has completed a college level math course and has been granted OIT Math credit:  If so, no assessment is needed and student will be pre-placed into the next level of Math for their major.  (See Math progression below.)

2.  Student has completed all math up to MATH 251 for their declared major and has been granted OIT Math credit:  If so, no assessment is needed and student will placed in next level of Math, if required.

4.  Student is a traditional freshman with no college hours:  The Oregon Tech Math Matrix will be used to determine the pre-placement of MATH.  (The Math Matrix utilizes the students ACT/SAT Math scores, HS GPA and major to determine correct MATH placement.)

(The Math Assessment measures the following Math levels: MATH 070, MATH 100, MATH 111, MATH 112, MATH 251.  Additional Math within your major may be required.)

Still not quite sure what to expect from placement testing?

Read the FAQs below for tips and answers to some of our most commonly asked questions.

What do I need to bring to testing?

The only thing you need is your picture ID.  The tests are online and personal calculators are not allowed. We will provide any scratch paper and pencils you may need.

Is placement testing really that important?

YES! Approximately 95% of OIT's entering students (including transfer students) MUST TAKE at least one placement test.  These results will be used to place you in your first classes in math, writing and (if necessary) reading.  Generally speaking, you will not be allowed to register for a course that is higher than what your placement test results recommend.

Why is Math placement testing required of so many transfer students?

Let's consider an example. If you took Math 100 at another college, that college's curriculum for Math 100 may not sequence well with OIT's Math 111; the grading standards of the other college's Math 100 may not have assured your competency; or, you may have forgotten much of what you learned in math 100.  In any of these cases, you would not be ready to succeed in OIT's Math 111.

Do I need to study for my placement tests?

You do not need to study for the reading or writing sections; however, we especially recommend studying for the math section of the test. Handheld calculators are not allowed on this test.  From our experience, many students under-prepare for the math test, and subsequently feel frustrated by a placement which they believe is too low. We advise that, prior to your test date, you review previously learned math concepts. To review, you may want to obtain a math textbook from a library or high school, and/or study materials from a previous math course which you've taken.  You may also access sample math test questions.  Please call our Testing center at 541-885-1971 if you have any trouble accessing these sample math test questions.

Can I practice taking the placement tests?

Yes! OIT uses the Accuplacer computer-based placement testing system.  Generally speaking, there's no need for you to work on any "practice tests", if you're just taking the reading or writing exams.  Still, if you would like to learn more about the reading and writing tests, and even see some sample problems, you can go to the "Accuplacer Introduction for Students" link to the right and find out more about these exams.  Please note that OIT does NOT use the Accuplacer written essay exam for writing placement-instead, we use the Sentence Skills (multiple choice) exam.

I have a disability that requires accomodations during testing, who do I need to contact?

Please contact our office at 541-885-1791 before testing.

If I test during ROAD and am not satisfied with my scores, can I retest?

Yes you can although there will be a fee assessed to all students who are retesting.  You will need to call CFLAT at 541-885-1791 to set up an appointment.
