Oregon Renewable Energy Center interns at Oregon Institute of Technology won a $1,500 Innovation in Engagement award this year from the Oregon Campus Compact. Michelle La Pierre, William "Drake" Fairbanks and Dereck Ruf together developed "Sustainable OIT" tours which in the future will be available to on-campus classes, prospective students, alumni and local school groups. The tours will highlight the innovative and unique sustainable features of Oregon Tech's Klamath Falls campus, such as geothermal heating, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-equivalent buildings and the OREC laboratory.
La Pierre and Oregon Tech Environmental Sciences Assistant Professor Carrie Wittmer traveled to Portland to present the winning project and to accept the award on April 23. La Pierre is a Health Sciences major from Cave Junction, Ore.
Fairbanks and Ruf are majoring in Renewable Energy Engineering. Fairbanks is from Bethel, Alaska, and Ruf is from Medford, Ore.
