Greening of Oregon's Workforce
The Department of Labor awarded $5,383,568 in ARRA funds for Oregon’s green jobs proposal in late January 2010. Oregon’s proposal was submitted through the Oregon Workforce Investment Board, and local workforce boards in Oregon. Oregon Tech’s $150,000 internship portion of the grant will be administered by Worksystems, Inc. and must benefit individuals who are U.S. citizens or those who have legal work status in the U.S.
The resources will be used to implement the Greening of Oregon’s Workforce project to develop local networks that will deliver engineering internships in green occupations. Internships will prepare workers for engineering careers in energy efficiency and renewable energy industries, including occupations that have long-term demand, offer the potential for high-wage, career-pathway jobs, and support local sourcing and innovation.
Oregon Tech, working in partnership with Worksystems, Inc., community colleges and industry partners, will develop engineering internships inside Oregon’s energy companies, for its Electrical, Mechanical, and Renewable Energy Engineering or Engineering Technology students. Companies that have committed to provide innovative internship opportunities for students to enhance their work experience and employability are Portland General Electric, Vestas America, Solar World, and other smaller companies in the focus industries: Renewable Energy, Green Building Practices, Advanced Drive Train and Energy Efficient Vehicles, and Supply Chain Manufacturing.
Downloadable documents such as a description and application for companies are available under "Grant-Supported Internships".
