Yulia Haley

Student, Class of 2021
Major(s): Dental Hygiene
Hometown: Russia

Where are you from?

Originally, I am from Russia. However, I have lived in Oregon since 2001. I lived in Virginia for six of those years because the Navy stationed me there.

Veteran status/branch of military and rank upon leaving: Damage Controlman/ E3/Navy

Awards/Accomplishments while at Oregon Tech: ASOIT representative for the Dental Hygiene Program

Why did you choose Oregon Tech?

I chose Oregon Tech because the Dental Hygiene program comes highly recommended. I wanted to get a Bachelor’s degree and I will be able to do that at this school. After coming back from Virginia, I wanted to stay in Oregon and go to school here because I love this magical state. I was ecstatic to get accepted into the Oregon Tech Dental Hygiene Program.

Did the Post 9/11 GI Bill option at Oregon Tech influence your decision to come here?

Yes, absolutely. Post 9/11 GI Bill and Vocational Rehab have tremendously helped me to be able to attend Oregon Tech. I would not be at this school if I did not have that financial backing. I would attempt to get into cheaper community colleges that offer associates degrees in my field of interest. I am beyond blessed and thankful to have VA in my corner. I hope that one day I can repay back all the goodness that they have done for me and help treat my fellow veterans through dental work.

What do you like most about your program?

I love that I am constantly learning something new. I like the challenge and I like that my program has caring instructors that will help me be successful in this field. I know that I am getting the best education I could possibly get. In addition to that, my program has a lot of community health outreach in which I am looking forward to getting to do.

What are you passionate about changing within this particular field and why?

In a perfect world, I would want everyone to be able to get dental care regardless of their financial situation. I grew up in poverty and dental care as a child for me was nonexistent in our country. I hope that one day everyone in the world can have the right to dental care.

What have been some of your favorite classes and why?

Community Dental Health because I will get to be involved in the community through dental treatment, oral health education and more.

Is there anything about Oregon Tech that you wish everyone knew about?

Yes, I would like everyone to know that we are offering very low cost cleanings, x-rays, sealants, oral cancer screenings, fluoride treatments and much more at our dental hygiene clinic. We are located in Semon Hall 218.

Do you have employment/graduate school plans for after graduation?

I plan on working in public health or in a private dental office. I will definitely stay in Oregon however, not sure what my exact location will be.

Is there anything more that you would like to share with future students about campus, what you wish you knew before attending Oregon Tech or anything else?

I find Klamath Falls campus to be a peaceful place. I was caught off guard how much it snows here and I was having a hard time getting to school in my Toyota Camry. So to the future students from out of the area be prepared to come to school and make sure your vehicle is up to par for the snow conditions.
