Joseph Brannan

Student, Class of 2017

Why did you choose this major?

I was previously a machinist when a professor from Oregon Tech encouraged me to pursue an engineering degree. He showed me what it means to be an engineer. I was really intrigued by it and thought that engineering might be more interesting than machining. Engineering also comes with a bigger paycheck.

What are you passionate about changing in this particular field and why?

I have become passionate about making any kind of a product faster and cheaper than anyone else can. I would like to use my degree to simplify life for everyone. We often hear people say, “It is not possible to do that” or ”It is not cost effective or efficient.” Well, I believe anything is possible if we put our minds to it and say, “Yes I can.” Therefore, if I can use my degree to make myself a better person as an engineer and help the world, while keeping the consideration of our planet in mind, I will have achieved my goals.

Why did you decide to join TOP?

Two friends of mine spoke to me about the benefits offered by the TRIO program. I thought that having other people available to help with homework would be helpful. Cultural trips provided by TOP were also be a great way to release stress.

Is there anything about Oregon Tech that you wish everyone knew about?

Oregon Tech’s reputation should be advertised in more ways. Companies must know more about us when considering their hiring processes.

What is your favorite hobby, and do you have any experiences you would like to share regarding that hobby?

My favorite hobby I carried for years was the drum corps. I used to play the trumpet and soprano bugle later in life. For several years, I was a soloist and participated in many championships.

What fuels you to succeed?

After being a machinist for many years, I realize that our world and technology are always changing. Someday, manual labor jobs will not exist. There might be some people living on the welfare system due to their lack of a higher education. I want to carry myself much higher than that. The only way I can advance myself is through education.

Who is your favorite professor and why?

I have had many awesome professors. Every one of them gave me the necessary tools to get where I am now. Although I find it difficult to name just one, I will say that Dr. Waterman has helped most. He has always been there for me. Without Dr. Waterman, I would not be able to continue living in Klamath Falls and finish this degree.
