Kathryn Rathburn

Student, Class of 2017
Major(s): Health Sciences

Why did you choose this program (major)?

I have always liked science. When I was growing up, some of the first texts I read were my mom’s medical books full of charts, graphs, pictures and numbers. I also really like animals and thought the Biology-Health Sciences major would give me a strong foundation to pursue careers in medicine, medical research or animal science.

At first, I did not fully believe I was ready for such a rigorous program, but Dr. O’Shaughnessy talked me into giving it a shot and assured me that I have the aptitude to complete this degree. If it were not for her, I would not have graduated.

How are you planning to use your degree in the future?

I would like to do research. Specifically, I am interested in cancer and drug development research. I am also interested in animal research, which may sound off-putting to some people, but I believe it could be very valuable. I love animals, and as a researcher I feel that I will be able to always advocate for the highest standard of care and respect for them.

Why did you decide to join TOP?

As a non-traditional student, I was looking for additional guidance in accessing campus resources, applying for scholarships, and other opportunities. Also, having one more group on campus pulling for me has been invaluable. It helped me stay focused and not give up in times of doubt.

Is there anything about Oregon Tech that you wish everyone knew about?

I wish I had known about the altitude of Klamath Falls before I came here. On a more serious note, I appreciate the high return on investment offered by Oregon Tech’s degree, the small class sizes, and the high quality of the education I received.

What is your favorite hobby, and do you have any experiences you would like to share regarding that hobby?

My favorite hobby is animal husbandry. I currently focus on breeding and showing rabbits, but in the past, I also trained dogs and bred other animals.

What fuels you to succeed?

I am fully aware that I am my children’s best resource at living good lives and having a positive future. I have been working very hard, but sometimes I have my moments of doubt and feel like giving up. However, I know that there is no real giving up. My family needs me, and I know that I will do everything I can to care and provide for them.

Who is your favorite professor and why?

My favorite professor is Dr. O’Shaughnessy. She has done nothing but have faith in me from the very beginning. She heard me cry and doubt myself; she was there to witness and celebrate my successes; she always supported me, and she always gave me an opportunity to redeem myself.

I also really appreciate Dr. Clark. He is inspirational, funny, gifted, but also kind, honest and very supportive of his students. I know that he knows my name, but I am not sure he knows how much I appreciate his impact on my life.
