Kimberly Clark

Alumna, Class of 2017
Major(s): Applied Psychology

Why did you choose this major?

I chose this major because I wanted to help others heal at a deep and profound level. I chose this major because I wanted to heal myself of the suffering that has been in my family and community for generations. It has been a long, hard road for me, yet many have assisted me and continue to encourage me up the mountain. I have dreamt of the day that I could return the favor and continue the legacy of helping others. I long to give back that which was generously given to me.

What are you passionate about changing in this particular field and why?

I am passionate about changing the acceptance of alternative therapies, like hypnosis and guided imagery. Many of these techniques have not been extensively researched, sometimes due to the lack of funding. It is my goal to bring Evidence Based Practices to the field of alternative practices, so insurance companies will cover alternative therapies and reduce the need to prescribe medications.

Why did you decide to join TOP?

My membership in TRIO began six years ago at Klamath Community College, when a fellow classmate suggested that I join the TRIO program. Before TRIO, I had no direction and no intention of ever taking a math class. Without TRIO, I never would have been able to survive the intense math requirements that I was so challenged by. I began in Math 10 and worked all the way through to statistics, which took a couple of years.

Is there anything about Oregon Tech that you wish everyone knew about?

I wish that everyone knew how committed OIT is to the community of Klamath Falls and to the betterment of the environment we live in. OIT takes an active role in helping us to recreate ourselves from the inside out, one student at time.

What is your favorite hobby, and do you have any experiences you would like to share regarding that hobby?

I am a gifted artist by nature and anytime I can express myself in a creative way, I feel blessed. I hope that one day I will be able to mix business with pleasure and become an art therapist.

What fuels you to succeed?

I am absolutely driven by the need to make up the part of my life that I missed, when my life was tormented by alcoholism and addiction. I am consumed by the passion to learn, live and love, and I am compelled by my Spirit to pay it forward.

Who is your favorite professor and why?

That is the toughest question of all. I have loved every professor, and my life has been changed forever by each of them. If I had to narrow it down, I would say that Dr. Kristen Konkel and Dr. Trevor Petersen have each had a profound influence on my awesome experience here at OIT. Each of them have taught me and mentored me extensively along my journey towards success.
