Alumni, Class of 2017

Why did you choose this program?

I always knew I wanted to be an engineer of some variety. My first thought was to become a bio-medical engineer and help design functional prosthetics. However, I quickly realized that the sight of blood makes me uncomfortable, which meant that my dreams of attaching prosthetics was probably not a good plan for me. At that point, I thought the next best way to help people would be to develop software that assisted them in some way.

What are you passionate about changing in this particular field and why?

I am passionate about creating applications that enable people to solve difficult problems, which I may not even know exist. I come from a background that allows me the privilege of being unaware of certain problems, but I want to make sure people who face challenges have the tools they need to overcome the challenges and to solve the problems.

Why did you decide to join TOP?

One of my friends who was in TRIO in high school suggested I apply to a TRIO program in college. After some research, I thought that as a first-generation college student having an additional support system was a good idea.

Is there anything about Oregon Tech that you wish everyone knew about?

I wish everyone knew how amazing all of the Computer Software Engineering staff are! All of the professors have been amazing and very helpful. Some went as far as having study parties for students at their houses.

What is your favorite hobby, and do you have any experiences you would like to share regarding that hobby?

I am an avid ‘crocheter.’ When I started learning how to crochet my mom had been already trying to crochet for a while. She spent a weekend trying to teach herself but was so frustrated. On the other hand, my dad grabbed the yarn and the hook and started crocheting right away. When my mom asked him why he did not tell her he knew how to crochet, he just shrugged and said, ‘Well, you didn’t ask.’ So, I learned how to crochet from my dad.

What fuels you to succeed?

I really want to pay at least one month of my parents’ mortgage while still paying all my own bills. My parents have been an amazing driving force for me, and they have been doing absolutely everything they could to make sure I could go to college.

Who is your favorite professor and why?

It is a tie between Todd Breedlove and Phil Howard. They are both so amazing and supportive, and they always made sure I fully understood the material and could ask any question.
