Student, Class of 2018
Sacramento, CA

Why did you choose Oregon Tech?

I chose Oregon Tech because of the small classes and the high job placement rate (getting a job right after graduation). I enjoy being surrounded by students who want to graduate college, instead of people who just want to party during college.

What do you like most about your program?

I love that my program is small. Being in the I.T. department I have the same classmates in almost all my classes. I enjoy the collaboration my classmates and I have with labs and non-major related classes.

What are your passionate about changing within this particular field and why?

I’m passionate about working with databases, whether it is building, creating, updating, and/or maintain data. I love to interpret data and give data meaning so businesses can find ways to grow and/or improve.

What have been some of your favorite classes and why?

Some of my favorite classes at Oregon Tech are my core classes. I love them because I learn valuable skills, I enjoy learning from my advisor and other classmates. Labs in my core class are fun for me, because having a small class means labs turn into group projects and students help one another. I enjoy the comradery my classmates and I have.

Are you involved on campus? If so, how?

My first year at Oregon Tech I ran Cross Country, Track & Field for Oregon Tech. Now I spend my winter term snowboarding with my friends in the Outdoor Program (O.P.) and occasionally go on the O.P.’s camping trips.

Have you participated in any internships or externships during your time at Oregon Tech? Did you gain valuable experience from them?

At first, I was not really planning on doing an internship, but my senior project had a summer internship that tied in with the project. So, I spent summer 2017 interning at Klamath Irrigation District collecting data and understanding the company’s workflow in order to build a database and web page for a water usage and tracking accountability system.  I have learned vital information from this ongoing experience. I gained a lot of technical confidence in myself, and validation/satisfaction I have chosen the correct major.

Is there anything more that you would like to share with future students about campus, what you wish you knew before attending Oregon Tech or anything else?

Try to make some friends in your core classes. Friends will help you pass your classes. If you are serious about graduating with a degree and wanting a job, then Oregon Tech would fit for you.
