Alumni, Class of 2017

Why did you choose this program?

My older brother, whom I look up to, studied engineering at OSU, and he is the one who encouraged me to look into electrical engineering. In addition, during my senior year of high school, I was fortunate to shadow an electrical engineer at a former electric motorcycle company called Brammo. I felt inspired by the high-tech projects that the company was developing, and so I decided to pursue electrical engineering.

What are you passionate about changing this particular field and why?

I am really drawn to the high-tech world and would like to work for a company that innovates, develops new technologies, and is able to think outside the box. I recently interviewed with Black & Veatch, and given their motto of “building a world of difference”, I felt that it would be a perfect fit. Although I was not chosen for the position, I gained interview experience as well as an insight into what I could be doing in the future.

Why did you decide to join TOP?

I decided to join TOP for the extra advising. Joining this program allowed me to meet many great students and work with some amazing people. I believe that my college experience would not have been the same had I not joined TOP. Even to this day, I appreciate all of the friendships and mentorship I gained from this program.

Is there anything about Oregon Tech that you wish everyone knew about?

I wish incoming students knew about the Peer Consulting Center and its hours. It is a great resource from day one, especially at Oregon Tech where you start taking major classes in your first year. Also, I really like the small school atmosphere where everyone is friendly and approachable. Once I started at Oregon Tech, I quickly became involved in student clubs such as the Association of Energy Engineer Club. It was one of the best decisions I have made as it helped me connect with upper classmen in my program.

What is your favorite hobby, and do you have any experiences you would like to share regarding that hobby?

I love cycling, especially out on the road whether it is raining or sunny. It is my goal to do a century ride (100 miles) someday in the near future. Cycling keeps me happy and healthy, and it is something that I will continue to do for the rest of my life.

What fuels you to succeed? What makes you so successful at Oregon Tech?

Looking ahead and seeing all of the interesting things I can do with my degree motivates me to get up every day and work hard. I hope to create a successful career for myself so that I can fully support my family.

Who is your favorite professor and why?

I really like Mehmet Vurkac who is able to explain complex problems in a very accessible and clear way. I have learned so much from him!
