Oregon Senate Confirms New Trustee, Vincent Jones, for Oregon Tech Governing Board

Vincent Jones, a retired civil engineer for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation will join his fellow trustees for the next meeting of the Board on June 29-30 in Klamath Falls

Salem, OR The Oregon Senate today confirmed a new trustee for the governing board of Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech): Vincent (Vince) Jones, a retired civil engineer for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation who started his career with the Oregon Department of Transportation. With his official term beginning immediately, Trustee Jones will join his colleagues for the next meeting of the Board on June 29-30 in Klamath Falls.

There are eleven at-large positions on the Board, three positions filled by Faculty, Staff and Student members, and an ex officio position held by Oregon Tech’s President, for a total of fifteen members. Mr. Jones is filling a vacant position and will serve for a 4-year term.

Vince Jones began his engineering career with the Oregon Department of Transportation and worked there for about four years before returning to Southern California where he worked for the City of Los Angeles, Department of Public Works, Bureau of Engineering for 27 years. Prior to his working career, Vince was a student athlete at Oregon Tech and played basketball for legendary coach Dan Miles from 1979-81, and graduated in 1985.

While at the City of Los Angeles, Vince worked on a wide range of projects as a design engineer, project manager and construction manager. Some of the programs he worked on included stints in wastewater design, new animal exhibits and facilities for the Los Angeles Zoo, and new library facilities. He was the Program Manager for a $600 million Citywide Public Safety Bond Program, responsible for managing staff, budget and schedule to deliver 13 projects to improve, renovate, expand and replace police, fire, and paramedic facilities. Vince also held the title of Deputy City Engineer/Assistant General Manager where he oversaw a program comprised of five distinct offices with 139 full-time employees and 160 projects with a capital improvement budget of over $243 million. The program was responsible for design, construction management and project management for street and storm water projects, environmental studies, geotechnical engineering, real estate negotiations and acquisitions, and structural engineering services for Los Angeles city projects. He also represented the City of Los Angeles on the coordination of the Endeavour Space Shuttle Move to the California Science Center. Vince has the distinction of being the first African American in the history of the Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering to reach the executive management level of Deputy City Engineer.

Vince currently serves as a commissioner on the City of Chino Hills Public Works Commission, and is a past Board Member and Treasurer for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Citizens On Patrol Volunteer Unit. He also volunteers as a youth basketball coach. Vince is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of California. He has an Associate of Engineering Degree in Structural Engineering and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Oregon Institute of Technology.
