About the Program
Recognizing that healthcare will continue to evolve in both knowledge and technology, Oregon Tech strives to engender in students a commitment to lifelong learning that will enable them to continually adapt to the changing demands of their profession. With this goal in mind, the Dental Hygiene program is designed to develop in students critical-thinking skills, self-evaluation, ethical and moral integrity, and a high degree of compassion in patient care. This is achieved through a unique holistic approach that combines highly effective professional training with hands-on outreach opportunities.

The department's goals are to:

  • provide a curriculum that challenges the role of the dental hygienist and is relevant to the needs of a changing profession.
  • create a physical and emotional atmosphere that is conducive to learning.
  • maximize a student's learning experience based on their learning style.
  • promote critical thinking skills and self-evaluation throughout the curriculum.

Upon graduation the Dental Hygiene graduate should be able to:

  • perform competently the entry-level clinical skills of a licensed dental hygienist.
  • demonstrate professional behavior consistent with legal requirements and ethical expectations.
  • seek opportunities to further their knowledge and skills.
  • effectively communicate with clients and other health professionals.
  • provide oral healthcare to groups and individuals utilizing the highest professional knowledge, judgment and ability.
