OIT Flu Update #7 - November 16
On Behalf of Erin Foley:
As Incident Commander for OIT's response to the H1N1 flu, I will provide updates to campus on a weekly basis.
Incidents:
No new cases of H1N1 reported. However, there are reports of colds and flu-like illness around campus. If you have a fever, please STAY HOME! Everyone has an important role on campus but the number one priority should be your health and not sharing your germs with others on campus. Being out of classes or work for a few days is better than making other sick.
Vaccine:
The H1N1 injectable vaccine is available on campus and is FREE of charge. This vaccine will be given to the following students, faculty, and staff in compliance with the CDC protocol:
Pregnant women
People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age
Health care and emergency medical personnel with direct patient contact
Students up to 24 years of age
Anyone from 25 through 64 years of age with certain chronic medical conditions or a weakened immune system
If you are eligible, please go to the Integrated Student Health Center in Semon Hall to receive the vaccine. Please continue to watch for vaccination information through TnDaily and special email announcements.
Prevention:
OIT's goal is to minimize the impact of H1N1 on community members and campus operations. Prevention and limiting the spread of H1N1 is key to this goal. Flu prevention stations are now located throughout campus. Please use the handwipes to clean the surface of your desk or work space before each class, and use the hand sanitizer throughout the day. Another type of prevention is to gargle with warm saltwater throughout the day!
Other precautions: frequent hand-washing (sing the ABCs twice for thorough washing) and cover your sneeze and cough (use your sleeve). Finally, if you have flu-like symptoms, please stay home and not share your germs with others. You should stay home until you have not had a fever for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication). Faculty members are encouraged to work with students absent from class due to the flu. Students, please contact your faculty members if you are out with the flu (don't play the "flu card" if you aren't sick!).
If you need assistance in contacting faculty members, please call the Student Affairs office at 541-885-1011.
Please remember that each of us has a role to play in preventing the flu!
