History of Oregon Tech Coaches

The coaches below are organized chronologically by the first year they began working at Oregon Tech.

Advisor Mark Ager: 1978-1980, 1982-1983

Mark Ager was one of the advisors, alongside James Hathorn, for the years 1978-1980, and 1982-1983.

Coach Junus Patel: 1978-1979

In 1978 Junus Patel was assigned as the new soccer coach to replace the acting player-coach Asad Arazi. Junus Patel only coached the team for a year.

 

Coach Doug Herland: 1979-1980

In 1979-1980 Doug Herland coached the Oregon Tech crew club. After Oregon Tech he moved on to coach at the University of Michigan, then to a city program in Baltimore, and then finally to Pacific Lutheran University. He was a strong advocate of adaptive rowing and helped many paraplegics, quadriplegics, and other athletes with disabilities row through a unique program he created called Freedom on the River. Coach Hector "CoCo" Ortiz: 1979-1980

Hector Ortiz replaced Junus Patel as the men's soccer coach in 1979. He coached the team for one year.

 

Coach Dick Arbuckle: 1981-1986

The Oregon Tech football head coach from 1981-1986 was Dick Arbuckle. He went on to serve as coach or staff at 7 more colleges including, but not limited to, Western Oregon University, Boise State University, and the University of California.

 

Coach Sue Thompson (Whitlatch): 1982-1993

Sue Thompson became the women’s volleyball coach in 1982 and held the position until volleyball was dropped as a sport in 1993 due to Oregon Ballot Measure 5 (which was enacted in 1990).

 

Coach Mark Haner: 1982-1990

Mark Haner was the wrestling coach from 1982-1990.

 

Coach Kevin Luckey: 1983-1986

In 1983 Kevin Luckey became the head football coach and held this position until Greg McMackin took over in 1986.

 

Coach Kurt Renstrom: 1983-1989

Kurt Renstrom coached baseball from the years 1983-1989.

 

Coach Greg McMackin: 1986-1990

The head football coach from 1986-1990 was Greg McMackin. After him, Craig Howard became the head football coach.

Once he left Oregon Tech Greg McMackin went on to be the defensive coordinator for 8 different teams, all but one which were college teams. Previously their defensive coordinator, he ended his career at the University of Hawaii as head football coach. He wrote a book titled Coaching the Defensive Backline, which is now in its seventh printing. He resigned from his position in 2011.

 

Advisor Eric Wakkuri: 1988-1989

For one year Eric Wakkuri was the advisor of the cross-country team.
