Dr. Yang is currently an Assistant Professor with the Electrical Engineering & Renewable Energy (EERE) Department. Prior to joining Oregon Tech, he was an Ezra Systems Postdoctoral Fellow with the System Engineering Program at Cornell University from 2021 to 2023 and a Research Fellow with the Energy Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University from 2020 to 2021.
Dr. Yang is an expert in the domain of intelligent energy systems control. His work focuses on leveraging model predictive control, optimization algorithms, data-driven techniques, and AI models to optimize the operation and design of building energy systems and seamlessly integrate distributed energy resources. The ultimate goal is to achieve heightened energy efficiency and move towards a decarbonized future.
His contributions have been recognized widely. He was awarded the Ezra Systems Postdoctoral Fellowship at Cornell University, the Best Presentation Award at the IEEE 5th International Conference on Green Energy and Applications, the Outstanding Paper Award at the 7th International Building Physics Conference, and the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad from the China Scholarship Council. He has a substantial publication record in the top-tier journals in the energy and building fields, including Applied Energy, Advances in Applied Energy, Building and Environment, and Energy and Buildings. He has completed several research projects funded by National Research Foundation Singapore, Smart Nation and Digital Government Office, Building and Construction Authority Singapore, etc. His intelligent control solutions have been implemented in many real-world buildings, including commercial deployment in Tuas port Admin Building (floor area > 10,000 m2) of PSA International Pte Ltd in Singapore and the headquarters building (floor area > 20,000 m2) of Guangxi Beibu Gulf Port Group in China. He is also a co-founder of the start-up company, NRGSense Technologies.
