A Little Bit About Me

I grew up on a small farm in a rural community outside of Salem, OR. My hobbies include reading, cooking and baking, crocheting, gardening, traveling, and drawing. I attend church at Athey Creek, and am devoted to the Christian faith. I grew up and continue to work on my family’s farm, which has taught me the value of hard work and how to have a good work ethic. I have developed a passion for the medical field through my classes and job shadowing experiences and am very excited for next year when I will begin the application process for dental schools.

Why I Chose Oregon Tech and My Major

I chose to attend Oregon Tech because I was originally pre-dental hygiene when I started college at Chemeketa Community College and applied to Oregon Tech with the intention of completing their dental hygiene program. However, I loved my anatomy and physiology, and microbiology classes so much that I decided to go further in my education and change my major to pursue a pre-dental undergraduate degree instead.

My Influential Professors

My most influential professors here at Oregon Tech would be my general chemistry professor, Dr. Edwards, and my calculus instructor, Professor Whiteley. General chemistry is a challenging class, but Dr. Edwards is a great professor who takes time to go through problems and explain topics in depth outside of class and has made general chemistry fun. Calculus was a subject that I was very nervous to take because math is not my strong suit, but Professor Whiteley was always willing to help me get through problems and explain topics in a way that made sense and made me not only succeed in the calculus classes I took but also enjoy them.

My Greatest Learning Experience At Oregon Tech

My greatest learning experience here at Oregon Tech would have to be the hands-on education during labs. I have really enjoyed taking immunology this term, and the labs for this class have been very interesting. So far, we have tested antigen-antibody complexes, done complete blood counts (CBC), and had a blood typing lab where the students were able to determine their own blood types. These labs in particular have been very in depth and are expanding my skill set both in laboratory practices and writing thorough lab reports.

My Plans After Graduation

My plans after graduation are to attend dental school and attain either a Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree and then specialize in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with an MD. When I am completely done with school and residency, I would like to open my own practice. I also plan on going on mission trips to provide healthcare to those in developing countries. Another goal for the future is to expand my family vineyard, gain some education in winemaking, and eventually own a winery.
