Extracurricular Activities
Outside of my academic work, I spend some of my time as a tutor for the local middle school. I help them develop skills in math and problem solving mainly, but I'm also able to help them with other subjects. As a hobby, I've recently begun exploring game design, experimenting with character design and storytelling. My background in robotics may not be relevant as of now, but I am hoping to go back into it in the coming academic year.
A Little Bit About Me
I'm a student at Oregon Tech, studying mechanical engineering. I'm from The Dalles, a town up in northern Oregon. I'm the eldest son of a family of immigrants. My family has always been hard working, and I feel that I follow in their footsteps. During the summer I work in the cherry orchards alongside my uncle. Despite the hard work, my family has always urged me to dream on and not let anything get in my way. So, I'm following my dream that I've had from a young age. I've been intrigued with how things work from a young age and I'm glad I can follow a career path that allows me to know more about the way things work. In high school I did robotics for 3 years. After my freshman year, which I used to get adjusted to college life, I'm ready to get into robotics or other clubs.
Why I Chose Oregon Tech and My Major
The main reasons that I chose Oregon Tech was its cost, class size, and resources. Compared to every other school I applied to, Oregon Tech seems like the most feasible option financially for my family and me. Class sizes that promote better relationships between students and professors really intrigued me. Lastly, post-graduation resources that help find a place in the job market was a must have for me.
My Influential Professors
During my short time here at Oregon Tech I’ve had a variety of professors, but one that has really stood out has been my public speaking professor, Dr. Eean Grimshaw. Dr. Grimshaw, throughout the whole course, made the learning process very engaging. Additionally, he always did his best to make sure each student was as comfortable as they could be before and during their speech. He maintained great relations with his students and showed genuine care for both their interests and their growth. As I wrap up my first year at Oregon Tech, I'm glad to say that Dr. Grimshaw had a great impact on me, and I hope to have many professors like him in the future.
My Greatest Learning Experience At Oregon Tech
My greatest learning experience while at Oregon Tech so far has been navigating my own path. Now that I am no longer in high school, I have to take responsibility for making sure I understand the material, something that was never anything I had to worry about. Now that I have to do the work that others did for me, I got to wondering if this is the path in life that I want. In the end, I decided that this is what I want. I am happy to work hard to study the field I am in, and I feel that in the end, there will be no regrets.
My Plans After Graduation
One of the things most valuable to me is to not let any help go unrewarded. So, when I graduate, I hope to find a job with good pay to pay back my parents for all the money they are putting into my education to show how thankful I am for all the work they put in. My family is very important to me, so I hope to find a place near my parents. Close enough that I can visit when needed but far enough away where I am no longer relying on them.
