A Little Bit About Me

My name is Jacob Lewis, and I grew up in Warrenton, Oregon, a small coastal community. I enjoy fishing, hiking, camping, surfing, and riding my motorcycle. I have been a part of the welding program at my school. I have always loved things like Legos and building projects. I love to learn how things work and how to make them better. School has always been important to me, and I have worked really hard to graduate fourth in my class. I look forward to learning mechanical engineering because it combines a lot of the things I love to do into one career field. I am really interested in the automotive industry and see myself working to improve automotive design. I can't wait to explore Klamath Falls and all the things it has to offer.

Why I Chose Oregon Tech and My Major

I have always loved taking things apart and learning how they work. Mechanical engineering seems like an obvious choice because I can do what I love as a career. Small class sizes and relationships with my teachers are important to me. When I visited OIT, I felt at home and noticed that the teachers seemed to know their students personally. I was also impressed with the quality of the labs.

My Influential Professors

I have taken band with Mr. Michael McClure since 5th grade. As a child, I was very shy, and being in the band helped me overcome my fear of being in front of a crowd. Mr. McClure really cares about each of his students and helps create a safe environment for students to learn. He is not only a teacher, but a friend. Having a class where I feel safe and look forward to helped me enjoy school, build friendships, and create opportunities over the years for leadership. I have learned several instruments, and music will always be a part of my life. Mr. McClure had a big part in helping me develop a love for music.

My Greatest Learning Experience At Oregon Tech

I took a college-level chemistry class in my sophomore year of high school. The class was a lot more difficult than I expected, and I struggled to keep up. It was the first time that school didn't come easily to me. I had to quickly learn new techniques for studying. I utilized flash cards, Khan Academy, and tutoring from my teacher. I was able to overcome my challenges and keep a good grade in the class. These study habits will help me in my difficult math and engineering classes at OIT.

My Plans After Graduation

I am interested in designing automobiles. I hope to gain experience while in college by joining the Formula SAE club, along with my engineering classes, to learn the skills I will need to work for an automotive company. I want to help make automobiles more efficient and affordable for the everyday person.
