A Little Bit About Me
My name is Jean Favazza, and I am a recent graduate of Oregon State University with a B.S in Microbiology and a minor in chemistry. I worked with The Rowe Lab, which focuses on the interactions between S. pneumoniae and IAV during co-infection. Another research opportunity was with The Giovannoni Lab, in which I led a project to understand the microbial loop component of the marine carbon cycle. Additionally, I volunteered at the Grace Center, which focuses on connecting and working with Alzherimer’s patients. Apart from the sciences, I participated in the theater arts as a Stage Manager in a litany of environments, including OSU’s Theatre, Cirque Du Soleil, and the ITF’s Nevada All-State Production. Furthermore, I joined the Oregon State University Marching Band as a trumpet player.
Why I Chose Oregon Tech and My Major
I chose OIT for their Medical Laboratory Science Professional Program. I learned about the career of MLS during my sophomore year of college at Oregon State University. Since I was already in the process of obtaining my B.S. in Microbiology, I decided to stick to the program. Learning that OIT provides an accelerated program for those with a bachelor’s degree made the school extremely appealing to attend.
My Influential Professors
As an incoming transfer student, my most influential professors were from Oregon State University. My Immunology professor, Dr. Lowry, provided such a unique and interesting perspective on the complex network of the immune system. In addition, Dr. Massoni was the professor that made me passionate about microbiology. He was my professor for General Microbiology and Bacterial Genetics. Furthermore, Dr. Rowe, my Bacterial Physiology & Metabolism and Virology professor, sharpened my learning skills by presenting high level material in a way that challenged me to think critically and become a better student.
My Greatest Learning Experience At Oregon Tech
The majority of my learning experiences were at OSU, where I received my B.S. in Microbiology. The most influential was my involvement in The Rowe Lab as an Undergraduate Researcher. During my time in Dr. Rowe's lab, I familiarized myself with not only a myriad of laboratory techniques, such as PCR, transformations, and cell culturing, but also current research in microbiology and virology spheres. With this, my passion for the diagnostic sciences was invigorated and made the decision to attend OIT for MLS an easy one.
My Plans After Graduation
After graduation, my goal is to work as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in the Portland Metro area. I would prefer to pursue a generalist approach to MLS at first as a way to gain real-world experience working in all of the laboratory departments and specialize into a particular department when I am more established in the field.
