A Little Bit About Me

Hi, My name is Tony Moran. I was born and raised here in Portland, OR and I'm proud of it. I went to Central Catholic high school and graduated in 2017. From there I attended Oregon State University but realized it wasn't the right place for me at that time. I needed to find my own direction. In the mean time I worked for a while and then pursued my passion for automotive technology and earned and AAS degree in automotive technology from MHCC and started down that career path. Eventually I realized that I had more to offer and wanted a greater challenge. Also, I wanted to end up in a career where I could provide support for a greater community. In my mind, renewable energy is key in fighting climate change and protecting our biosphere is something that every community will benefit from.

Why I Chose Oregon Tech and My Major

I chose OIT because it offered the major I was interested in, Renewable Energy Engineering. I was working as a trained mechanic with an AAS in automotive technology before I came to OIT. I realized the inefficiencies of ICE vehicles which led me to an interest in electric vehicles and then renewable energy/ the energy industry at large. I realized that energy technology is the key to a sustainable future.

My Influential Professors

My most influential professor by far is Dr. Naga Korivi. I met him during my circuits sequence in my 2nd year to filled in and teaching circuits I. Dr. Korivi brings a passion to OIT that is a great asset. I've seen the work he has done to improve the student experience in the EREE department and his impact is felt by the students. I am happy to have built a good relationship with him that has led to my involvement in research outside the classroom which has been insightful. Prof. Francis Bartholomew was an adjunct that helped teach my circuits series and he also was influential in his encouragement to get involved in extra-curricular projects.

My Greatest Learning Experience At Oregon Tech

My greatest learning experience at OIT is born out of my experience of failure, learning how to deal with it and move forward. Specifically trying to pass my Differential Equations math class. The first time I took this class I was a bit overwhelmed and had a hard time keeping up and understanding the material to the point that I unfortunately failed the class. When I retook the class I changed my approach and applied myself harder and it ended up being my favorite math subject and now I apply that material all the time.

My Plans After Graduation

I plan to make my way into the energy industry most likely through working in power delivery design. I want to understand the industry and help work to secure the future of renewable energy and help its proliferation. Ultimately my goal is to be in a position where I can say I am responsible for people getting power in their homes and businesses and being able to tell them it came from a renewable source.
